Customs: Visas and inoculations against cholera and yellow
fever are required for entry.

Climate and clothing: Lightweight, tropical clothing is worn
year round, although in the cooler season (June-September), a
light wrap is useful in the evenings. Due to cultural
sensitivities, conservative dress is recommended.

Health: Community sanitation controls are generally enforced.
Tapwater is not potable. Water should be boiled and filtered and
fruits and vegetables carefully prepared.

Telecommunications: Direct-dial telephone and cable services
are available to the UK, US, and other parts of the world.
Tanzania is eight standard time zones ahead of eastern standard
time and does not observe daylight-saving time.

Transportation: Dar es Salaam is served by several
international airlines. Taxis are available 24 hrs. at certain
locations; fare should be agreed upon in advance. Buses and
trains are generally overcrowded. Traffic moves on the left.

Tourist attractions: In Dar es Salaam, visitors can view
traditional Tanzanian architecture at the Village Museum,
Makonde carvings at the National Art Gallery, and chief's
stools at the National Museum. The Kunduchi Ruins and Msasani
Village, a fishing village with tombs from the 17th to 19th
centuries, are both short drives from Dar es Salaam. Beaches and
snorkeling are particularly good on Bongoyo and Mbuja Islands.
Fishing on Mafia Island, about a 40-minute flight from Dar es
Salaam, is best from September to March.

The northern circuit is most popular with visitors. Places of
interest include Arusha National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Moshi,
Tarangire Park, Lake Manyara National Park, the Serengeti
Plains, Olduvai Gorge, and Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The southern circuit, which is not as well known, offers more
than 724 km. (450 mi.) of white beaches along the Indian Ocean,
Mikumi National Park, Ruaha National Park, Gombe National Park,
and the Selous Game Park. Towns of interest include Bagamoyo,
Morogoro, Dodoma, Iringa, and Mbeya.

On Zanzibar, the Old Stone Fort, House of Wonders, the former
slave market, Mangapwani Beach, and Grave and Prison Islands are
favorite attractions.

Birdwatching is a popular pastime. Hunting is permitted
July- December. Travelers should consider packing supplies for
trips out of Dar es Salaam, as the shops are frequently without
essentials.

National holidays: Businesses and the US Embassy may be
closed on the following Tanzanian holidays:

Zanzibar Revolutionary Day, January 12; Birth of Chama Cha
Mapinduzi, February 5; Union Day, April 26; International
Workers Day, May 1; Peasants Day, July 7; Independence Day,
December 9; Christmas Day, December 25.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are observed. Idd El Fitr, Idd
El Hajj, and Maulid Day are Muslim holidays subject to the lunar
calendar.
